14th September 2007 Print
Angus Rigby, Chief Executive Officer, TD Waterhouse, commented: Resource stock has attracted considerable investor attention over the last month, and this week it was the turn of Xstrata PLC to re-enter our top ten buys list. The Company has mirrored sector-wide trends over the course of the last twelve months, with its stock value up an impressive 42.56 per cent year on year. This week the mining group announced that it had bought back 500,000 of its shares through Batiss Investments as part of an ongoing buyback programme.

It has also been a busy week for telecoms group BT after the Company agreed to acquire Belgian based network integrator INS, while also announcing plans to enhance its presence in China by opening a new research and development centre in Shanghai. Shares in the Company have been performing well throughout the year, up 22.66 per cent on 2006 and TD Waterhouse customers have taken the opportunity to increase their exposure to the stock this week.

Elsewhere, our customers decided to take profits in Glaxosmithkline after fresh reports linking Avandia, one of the pharmaceutical giant’s biggest selling drugs, to an increased risk of heart failure. Shares in the Company have risen 76 pence in the last month. By contrast, investors have shown confidence that the downward trend at Legal & General will reverse, following a sharp fall in the value of the group’s stock at the start of September and the stock reached number nine in our buys list.
