Top Ten Retail Investor Buys & Sells for week ending 2 November 2007
Angus Rigby, Chief Executive Officer, TD Waterhouse, commented: The Competition Commission released provisional findings this week in light of an investigation into the UK grocery market, with Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket group, under the spotlight. One of the most crucial findings was that the Company is not causing unfair competition between the largest grocery retailers and smaller traders and that its position is not so strong that others are unable to compete. Despite hitting an annual high of 491p per share at the tail end of this week thanks to a lift in share price of over 3 per cent week on week, TD Waterhouse customers chose to take profits and the stock reached number nine in our sells list.Elsewhere, life insurer, Standard Life is popular amongst our customers this week after it hit the news over the fierce bidding war for Resolution. Share price in the Company is down 1.17 per cent (3.25p) on last week after Resolution backed out of last Friday’s agreement of a £4.9bn deal with the Standard Life/Swiss Re consortium. Resolution had also recently withdrawn from a previous deal with Pearl Assurance, but chairman Clive Cowdery said it continued talks with both sides "to bring forward offers that maximise the value to Resolution shareholders."
Meanwhile, investor interest has been high in Equator Exploration, the West Africa focused oil and gas producer which suffered massive losses last Wednesday when share prices halved in value due to ongoing security issues, funding problems and a failed merger attempt. The troubles over the last six months have seen share price range from 11.75p - 93.50p. Despite this, share price in the Company increased dramatically by 44 per cent this week on last prompting TD Waterhouse to customers to increase their exposure to the stock this week.
