Top Ten Retail Investor Buys & Sells for week ending 9 November 2007

9th November 2007 Print
Angus Rigby, Chief Executive Officer, TD Waterhouse, commented: The financial services sector held a strong presence in the Top Ten trades this week with Barclays, RBS, Lloyds TSB, Bradford & Bingley and Northern Rock heading up the Top 5 Buys. This occurs in a week that has seen UK interest rates dominate the news with the announcement that the Bank of England are to hold rates at 5.75 per cent, a level retained since July this year. A major factor in this rate decision was the soaring price of crude oil which received further headline coverage this week after prices reached almost $100 a barrel.

The mining sector also enjoyed heavy trading activity this week amongst TD Waterhouse customers as BHP Billiton, the Anglo-Australian mining giant, boosted the FTSE 100 with its £67bn takeover bid for Rio Tinto. Rio Tinto refused the initial offer on the grounds that the proposed all-share offer "significantly undervalues" it. However, BHP said that it was still looking to negotiate further and analysts are expecting a protracted campaign to follow. The mining giant has seen a year high of 1,880p a share last month but saw share value slip by 33p this week on last.

Sainsburys, the FTSE 100 supermarket chain, found itself in the news again this week with a fall in share value of 21 per cent following Monday’s news that Qatari fund suitor Delta Two had withdrawn its £10.6bn bid for the UK supermarket. Despite this blow, JP Morgan made the decision to lift the Company from 'underweight' to 'neutral’ status, boosting hopes for long term investors and our customers increased exposure to the retailer this week.
