Torbay Council and its regeneration arm the Torbay Development Agency (TDA) are in the final stages of a tendering process that will seal a major multi-million pound contract to tranform Brixham's quayside over the next 5 years.

Dean and Dyball have been selected as the preferred contractors for the project which will include a world class fish market and employment space in nearby Oxen Cove. They will now be carrying out a number of studies, investigations and detailed design work to get an accurate final cost. This will allow further discussions between the TDA and various funders to confirm the project's viability, once this has been agreed the final contract will be awarded and it is hoped the contractor will start on site in Autumn of this year.

Richard Morgan, Chief Executive of the Torbay Development Agency, said: "The appointment of a preferred contractor marks a significant milestone in the exciting plans to regenerate Brixham's quayside and I am delighted that the project is progressing at such a fast pace.

"A new fish market is a pivotal part of the Brixham regeneration sheme which will also provide new shopping facilities, commercial space for businesses in the town and it is estimated will create around 360 new jobs in the long term."

Tenders for the project were received from contractors across the country following funding for the project from Torbay Council (£6million), South West RDA (£8.6million) and £2million of European funds managed by Defra's Marine Fisheries Agency and investment through European Objective 2.

An evaluation panel considered the tenders according to an agreed set of criteria based on quality and cost.

Sue Brownlow, Head of Operation in Devon for the RDA: "This project is aimed at giving Brixham a future that the town can be proud of. The decision on the preferred contractor means the project is on track to deliver real benefits to the community."

Dean and Dyball’s Regional Director, Andy McAdam, said: “I am delighted Dean and Dyball is to be involved in this significant regeneration project for Torbay and the south west. We look forward to the successful conclusion of the important work we have to do in the coming months and the start of construction works in October.”

Jon Andrewes, Chair of Brixham 21 said: "This latest announcement is tremendous news for Brixham and marks a significant step towards the extensive regeneration plans for the town."
