Making friends in Devonport

1st August 2007 Print
Friends of Devonport and Redrow's Anne Tillett Award-winning house-builder Redrow Homes has put the swing back into Devonport’s step with a generous donation towards the forthcoming Friends of Devonport Park summer event on September 15.

Fears that the celebration may have to be cancelled were quashed when Redrow – who are developing the former South Yard in Devonport - made their £2,000 donation towards the day, becoming the event’s main sponsors.

Plans for the ‘Community Spirit’ event are now well and truly underway, and it’s hoped it will pull in even more crowds than the thousand-plus people who attended last year’s event.

Anne Tillett, community liaison officer for Redrow in Devonport, says: “More than just a housebuilder, Redrow likes to get involved with and support the communities in which it builds. Nowhere is this more true than at our Vision scheme, which is revitalising the heart of Devonport.

“We were hugely impressed with the efforts and real sense of community displayed by the Friends of Devonport Park, who are all volunteers. We’re delighted that we have been able to support the event and ensure that it goes ahead for the enjoyment of everyone in the town and surrounding area.”

Formed in September 2005, the Friends of Devonport Park is a group of dedicated volunteers, whose main interest is the preservation and restoration of Devonport Park for the use of all people living in the surrounding areas.

Redrow’s sponsorship will help towards the cost of hiring marquees, generators, PA systems, children’s amusements, a variety of music and entertainment for all ages and tastes, and much more.

Priscilla Carroll of Friends of Devonport Park, comments: “We are absolutely delighted with Redrow’s donation which has allowed this much loved event to take place. Although Redrow is a major national developer, we are pleased that they are now at the heart of our community with this donation and we are so grateful.”

Vision is an award-winning regeneration project that is changing the face of the former South Yard enclave and bringing new life to Devonport. It will eventually feature around 460 one and two-bedroom apartments, two, three and four-bedroom houses, including a high proportion of affordable housing, plus a range of employment and retail outlets. The first properties are being sold ‘off-plan’ and are expected to be ready for occupation in spring 2008.
