Redrow regeneration plans set to win third award

Redrow regeneration plans set to win third award The community of Devonport has much to celebrate following the announcement that the regeneration programme which includes Redrow’s unique Vision project is one of the front runners in the ‘Best Use of Planning in Regeneration’ category of the Regeneration & Renewal Awards 2007. The winner will be announced in London on 17th September.

The awards aspire to seek out and reward schemes of only the highest merit. The category for which Devonport and the Vision scheme, in Plymouth, has been nominated is awarded to the entry that demonstrates the greatest positive social, economic or environmental benefits attributed to its design.

This latest short-listing follows swiftly on from the overall regeneration of Devonport winning the Sustainable Communities Award at the national RTPI Planning awards and the Vision scheme itself being commended in the ‘Housing project of the year’ category at the Mail on Sunday British Homes Awards.

The Regeneration & Renewal entry was compiled by the scheme’s master planners, Matrix Partnership, who prepared the original Devonport Development Framework on behalf of the community, local regeneration agency DRC Partnership and partners and the initial masterplan for Vision.

Local resident and Vice Chair of the DRC Partnership Board, Dave Brown said “This latest shortlisting once again recognises the hard work of residents and partners to develop an innovative and community focused master plan for our area. It’s great to be seeing that plan come together.”

Matt Lally, Matrix director, said: “We are told that there were fifty entrants for this award category. We are delighted to make the shortlist. You only have to look at all the construction work underway to see what a positive influence the masterplanning process has been on Devonport’s revival.”

Chris Anderson, Redrow’s project manager for Vision, says: “It’s so exciting to see the Devonport regeneration project short listed for its third award at such an early stage. It is proof of the hard work and determination of everyone involved in bringing

this hugely important development to fruition.”

Vision, is Redrow’s new mixed-use neighbourhood on the site of the former South Yard in Devonport. It will see the total transformation of the area, which once formed part of the town centre until it was requisitioned by the MoD following the Second World War.

Eventually the development will compromise circa 460 new, one and two-bedroom apartments, and two, three and four-bedroom houses, including a high proportion of affordable housing plus a range of employment and retail outlets.

The new homes will be sympathetic to the town’s history with the innovative designs striking a perfect balance between respectably blending in with the historic settings and sympathetically introducing contemporary design elements.

Work on clearing the site is now well advanced and the first properties have been released for sale ‘off-plan’, with first legal completions expected in spring 2008.
