Fun for all as Vision launches its first ‘street’

A day of magic and fun will mark the launch of the first completed ‘street scene’ at Redrow’s ground-breaking Vision scheme, which is transforming the heart of Devonport. A magician, balloon artist, face painter, circus acts and Redrow’s very own Buster the Bear will be on hand on Granby Green this Saturday from12 noon (March 8) to ensure the occasion goes off with a bang, when the award-winning housebuilder celebrates another milestone as it changes the face of the former South Yard Enclave.

The official ribbon-cutting to mark the completion of the first row of terraces will be carried out by long time Devonport resident Bill Bannister , who lived within the boundaries of the former MoD site until his family home was destroyed by a World War II bomb. He will be joined by local school children as the whole community is invited to the development to view its progress first hand.

Clare Taylor, Vision’s community liaison officer, said: “The opening of the first terrace row is another major step in the regeneration of Devonport. The day promises to be lots of fun for the children, with a circus skills workshop and plenty of entertainment, but it is also about bringing the whole community together to celebrate the great strides the area is taking in terms of redevelopment.

“As well as taking in the atmosphere on the day, visitors to Vision can also enjoy a tour around the show home; the first-fully decorated and furnished property available to view. From 2pm onwards there will also be an exhibition in the marketing suite of past, present and future community involvement at Vision as well as sales information available for prospective purchasers.”

Since being chosen as the preferred developer by English Partnerships, Redrow has engaged with the local community on a regular basis, including events to mark the demolition of the three-metre high security wall that once surrounded the site and the opening of the information centre. It has also supported local events such as the Friends of Devonport Park ‘Community Spirit’ event last September.

Vision is an award-winning project to rejuvenate the former South Yard enclave, which was once part of the town centre until it was requisitioned by the MoD shortly after the Second World War.

It will eventually feature around 460 one and two-bedroom apartments, two, three and four-bedroom houses, including a high proportion of affordable housing, plus a range of employment and retail outlets. The first properties have been sold ‘off-plan’ and the first residents are expected to move in this Spring.

The designs of the properties at Vision will accentuate and complement the proportions and broad character of surrounding architectural heritage and will help to create a diverse and interesting environment with a perfect balance between traditional and contemporary styles.

The ribbon cutting will take place at 12noon on Saturday, March 8, which will be followed by a few words from Bill Banister and Redrow’s project manager Chris Anderson. Devonport Councillor Nicky Wildy will also be attending.
