Full steam ahead at St Albans
Linden Homes has begun its transformation of St Albans Railway Station, the first mixed use development in the UK to be built directly on a major transport interchange, in a pioneering example of urban regeneration. The mixed development worth £100 million, will include 255 one, two and three-bedroom apartments and an additional 107 affordable homes, along with a doctor’s surgery, office units and a health and fitness centre.
The station, meanwhile, which serves 5 million passengers annually, will benefit from a £20 million transformation with lifts to all platforms, a multi-storey car park, a new bus interchange, bicycle storage and new retail outlets.
Philip Davies, Chief Executive of Linden Homes comments: “We are delighted to be the first housebuilder to venture into an urban regeneration project of this kind, redeveloping a major outer London railway station while at the same time providing much-needed affordable housing for the area. Local communities can benefit hugely when developers invest in the improvement of local services as well as new homes, and Linden is proud to be creating a catalyst for further economic growth in St Albans.”
Dyan Crowther, Route Director at Network Rail added: “St Albans is a busy station and the improvements will be welcomed by the growing number of passengers on this route. A bigger, better, brighter station will emerge on the site, imaginatively funded through commercial development.”
