Delighted downsizers find a home for two

Delighted downsizers find a home for two After their two daughters flew the nest one South Wales couple decided it was time to bid farewell to their large old townhouse and downsize to a more comfortable new home for two in Newport.

Neil and Vivienne Watson opted for a brand new, and still spacious, three-storey ‘Neale' home at Redrow's Alexandra Gate development, which is conveniently close to their daughter Amanda's new ‘Debut' starter home, also built by Redrow at the same location.

Vivienne, 46, a dermatology course administrator at nearby St Woolos hospital, said: "After our daughter Amanda moved out and Vicky had gone off to university we found our five-bedroom home was much too big for the two of us and we were only living in half of it. After putting it on the market we found a cash buyer quite quickly and had initially decided to rent, until our solicitor told us about the current incentives being offered by Redrow at Alexandra Gate.

"We realised, with the substantial discount Redrow offered us, it was actually much more cost-effective for us to buy a property than to rent. The price was much more affordable than we had first thought and we decided it was the right time to buy.

"We were already familiar with the development as Neil is a housing repairs clerk for Newport City Council and Amanda had bought one of the ‘Debut' first time buyer homes and we were quite taken with area. It is a fabulous location just five minutes from town but it's still quiet. And of course we had the added bonus of living close to Amanda."

Not only will the Watson's brand new four-bedroom townhouse overlooking the river require no costly repairs or renovations and be much more energy efficient than an older property, it is also protected by the National House Building Council (NHBC) 10-year Buildmark warranty.

Alexandra Gate has a wide-range of homes on offer, whether it is for a family, young professional, retired couple or first-time buyer. The new homes are part of a major facelift for the city and the first part of the wider regeneration plans for Old Town Dock. The surrounding area will also contain an office district, an 80-room hotel, a park and other facilities all set along the banks of the River Usk.

With the M4 motorway nearby providing easy access to other major towns and cities, including Cardiff and Bristol, the development is perfect for commuters working outside of Newport.

Properties at the development range from one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom homes and are currently priced from £99,995 to £172,995.
