George is ‘man about the house’ at Webb Court, Stourbridge

Culwick George with Mary Bunch and Bessie Hingley Valentine’s day will be extra special this year for George Culwick, 86, who is enjoying a whole new social life with a house full of ladies at McCarthy & Stone’s Webb Court retirement development in Drury Lane, Stourbridge.

And he is often the centre of attention at the many social gatherings and outings that are organised by his fellow residents, the vast majority of whom are female.

George was originally bowing pressure from his family when he bought a retirement apartment at Webb Court. But he’s very glad he did because now that he’s settled in, he’s having the time of his life!

George, who was previously living in a three-bedroom detached house in Halesowen said: “I have three granddaughters and four great granddaughters all living in Pedmore and for years they had been trying to persuade me to move nearer them. They also thought I should have something smaller than my old house and easier to manage, like a bungalow or a flat. After my wife died the house really was much too big, whereas my two-bedroom ground floor apartment at Webb Court suits me fine.

“I am one of only five men, and two of the others are married. The ladies include me in all their outings and to the cinema or theatre and the parties we have in our beautiful lounge. It’s great fun!

“My family are pleased with my apartment partly because they know the security is good and I have a 24-hour Careline I can use in case of emergency. My son, who lives in Kinver, visits regularly and thinks it’s great.”

The lounge is just one of the shared facilities at Webb Court; there is also a landscaped garden, a guest suite and a laundry room.

The development is designed for people over 60 who need a manageable and secure home without sacrificing their independence.

There are one- and two-bedroom apartments available for sale and each one is connected to a 24-hour personal emergency system and video surveillance at the main entrance.

Prices start from £ 136,450 for a one-bedroom and from £163,950 for a two-bedroom.
