Apprentice is ‘Roding' high with Redrow

Apprentice is ‘Roding' high with Redrow A young apprentice is gaining valuable experience of the construction industry, helping to build new homes on land purchased from the college where he studies.

Calvin Nanga, 18, has joined the workforce at The Rodings in Loughton, which will provide him with an insight into the construction world and eventually gain him a qualification.

The teenager is studying bricklaying at Epping Forest F.E. College, who originally sold the land to Redrow for development. He was taken on by the award winning housebuilder for a three-year apprenticeship after beating dozens of other applicants.

Calvin, from Leytonstone, said: "I'd already done two years at college and had quite a lot of experience but you can't beat working on site and learning practical skills. I also get to watch the other brickies, who have been doing the job a lot longer, which is really worthwhile."

Redrow is committed to providing opportunities for young people across the UK, whether through apprenticeships, graduate training, mentoring or providing educational resources such as the online Redrow Learning Web.

Paul Scott, Redrow's site manager at The Rodings, said: "Apprenticeships are a win-win situation for everyone involved because there's a benefit for both sides. We have an extra pair of hands on site and after three years Calvin will have a valuable qualification and greater earning potential."

Redrow's new development is adjacent to Epping Forest F.E. College and proceeds from the land sale are contributing to the college's redevelopment, which will see outdated accommodation replaced by a new state-of-the-art building.

Once completed The Rodings will feature around 268 properties, including one and two-bedroom apartments, two, three and four-bedroom houses, plus a proportion of affordable housing.
