Persimmon supports plans for larger garages

Essex County Council is the first local authority in the country to confront the Government’s guidelines, and will now enable developers like Persimmon to offer as many parking spaces they feel their residents will need as opposed to the Government’s standard 1.5 spaces per dwelling. The Council will also stipulate that garages will need to be at least 21m² enabling homeowners to park their car and get out with ease.
Ian Jeffrey, managing director of Persimmon Homes Essex, states: “Essex County Council’s brave challenge comes as welcome news to us at Persimmon. Househunters often believe and are forgiven for thinking that we as builders govern how many spaces and how large or small our garages are, but this isn’t the case as it’s actually the planners who determine these factors.
“Listening to purchasers’ requirements we’re already offering larger garage space and longer driveways at our The Poppies development in Little Dunmow and it’s something we’d like to see more of at developments in the future, planning permission permitting.
“At The Poppies we were able to work with the planners to trial single garages with 20.83m² space, double tandem garages with 37.92 m² space and full double garages with an area of 34.88 m² and in some instances driveways for up to four cars.”
The larger garages allow purchasers to use their garages not only for their cars, but also bicycles, barbeque sets, gardening equipment and outdoor furniture.
Ian concludes: “We hope that what we’ve been able to achieve at The Poppies will be able to become the norm at future developments as we strive to not only meet, but exceed our homeowners requirements and expectations.”
