David Wilson Homes protects the environment

27th October 2008 Print
David Wilson Homes South West is proving that it is not just a house builder as it helps a different type of resident to settle into their new homes across the South West region.

As part of a wildlife conservation initiative, David Wilson Homes has been translocating slowworms and newts from new developments in Bishops Lydeard and Tetbury to suitable receptive habitats in the local area before any building work begins.

Technical director for David Wilson Homes South West, Tim Blythe, comments: "When we develop a piece of land we not only have a responsibility to develop high quality, spacious and stylish homes suited to the needs of the local community, we also have a responsibility to the local wildlife and to the environment in which we are working. It is important for us to maintain, if not enhance that environment and to look after or relocate any wildlife in the area accordingly.

"We are delighted to be working alongside the local planning authority to safely relocate slowworms and newts from Bishops Lydeard and Tetbury to safe and sustainable environments in which they can continue to thrive and grow undisturbed."

As part of the project, David Wilson Homes has employed an ecologist at The Hamptons in Tetbury who has been overseeing the move and whose expertise have been brought in to guarantee the transit is done in the safest and most environmentally friendly way possible. All wildlife is monitored closely, the new environments are chosen carefully and thoroughly prepared to ensure that the slowworms are well suited to their new homes, whilst existing wildlife is continually monitored to regulate the effects of the new creatures on the eco system.

Meanwhile, at the Bishops Lydeard site, a clear up is underway to ensure that the soil on the development is cleared of oil and petrol left from the lands previous use as a coach repair shop. The clear up will ensure that the development is a safe and secure environment for its new community and the renewed soil will encourage local wildlife and greenery to prosper.
