George Wimpey raises funds for Scottish cancer charities

21st June 2007 Print
Maureen Thomson George Wimpey West Scotland has made a significant contribution of £24,000 to boost the funds of The Beatson Oncology Centre Fund in Glasgow and The Kaima Trust in Ayr. Each charity was recently presented with £12,000.

These donations are the culmination of a great team effort by the production and site teams at George Wimpey West Scotland to organise and host a corporate golf day at Lanark Golf Club at the beginning of June. The whole event raised £24,000 with awards of £12,000 made to both The Beatson Oncology Centre Fund and The Kaima Trust in Ayrshire.

The Beatson Oncology Centre serves the population of the West of Scotland. It is the leading centre for the delivery of non-surgical cancer care for the area, and as such provides a very wide-ranging and diversified service from multidisciplinary teams of staff. The Beatson Oncology Centre Fund was established to deal with donations to the centre and this has evolved into a fund which supports items for patient comfort, training and education of staff within the centre, major equipment/capital items and minor research projects.

Commenting on the support from George Wimpey West Scotland, Dr Robertson, Treasurer of the Fund said: “We’re delighted to accept this significant donation from George Wimpey West Scotland. Work that is supported by the fund would not otherwise be funded from the NHS resources, and donations therefore are very welcome and valued. This money will be used directly in the provision of comfort and care for patients.”

The Kaima Trust provides a drop-in centre in Ayr for women and men facing breast cancer. It was founded in May 1999, to help people and their families with their diagnosis of breast cancer and offers a range of services.

These include informal emotional support, patient advocacy, to one-to-one therapy and education, as well a information regarding developments and progress in the treatment of breast cancer. The project has the support of the local Breast Care Surgeons breast care nurses, GPs and District Nursing service, and has helped around 200 people since it launched.

The support shown by George Wimpey West Scotland offers The Kaima Trust a massive injection of funds as Irene McAnally of The Kaima Trust adds: “Receiving £12,000 from George Wimpey West Scotland is amazing for our charity. This amount of donation will actually allow us to continue in the provision of our vital services to both men and women for around a year and we’re delighted to accept such a generous contribution from the team at George Wimpey.”

George Wimpey is delighted by the response they received from staff and suppliers in their support of their fund-raising efforts as John Mitchell, production director for George Wimpey West Scotland explains: “Each of our nominated charities – The Beatson Oncology Fund and The Kaima Trust – have played a significant role in their support of a number of our staff, friends and colleagues over the years, so it’s great to be able to make such a positive contribution to them to boost their funds allowing them to continue their valuable work. And I’d like to thank each of the companies involved in making this such a worthwhile charity event.”
