Austrian simplifies excess baggage charges

4th June 2007 Print
With excess systems based on the ticket price the cost of carrying excess baggage has been difficult for passengers to calculate which can result in frustration and delays at check-in. Austrian’s new zonal system provides greater transparency and simplicity. The network is segmented in to five zones and excess is charged per kilo accordingly.

Zone 1: within Austria - Euro 5
Zone 2: within Europe, excl. CIS States - Euro 10
Zone 3: Between zones 1&2 to CIS and Middle East excl. Gulf - Euro 20
Zone 4: Between zones 1&2 to Africa, Gulf & parts of SE Asia & S America - Euro 30
Zone 5: Between zones 1,2,3,4 and Asia (excl. SE Asia), between zones 3 & 4 and between Middle East (excl. Gulf) & CIS - Euro 40

Sports Equipment

A simplified system is also implemented for sports equipment, although scheduled passengers will still be entitled to carry one pair of skis or one snowboard at no extra charge. Previously the calculation was based on the type of equipment e.g. golf clubs, now it is based upon size and weight and route.

Piece Concept – Transatlantic

The ‘piece concept’ is unaffected by the new system and applies to flights to or from the USA, US Territories, Canada and Mexico. In principle two pieces of baggage (Economy Class: 23kg each) may be taken free of charge. If the baggage exceeds the permitted number, weight or size the piece concept will be applied.
