New Zealand claims Emirates rugby title
Just as in Dubai the previous weekend, New Zealand was unbeatable; in what was a re-run of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens final, the All Blacks beat Fiji to claim the Emirates Airline South Africa Sevens title in George on Sunday evening.The electrifying final match saw the All Blacks score four remarkable tries in the first half. Despite New Zealand conquering the match, the Fijians managed to score one try early during the second half, bringing the score to 29 - 7. In the final minutes of the game New Zealand scored another try and in doing so defended their title with a final score of 34 - 7.
For the past nine years, Emirates Airline has been the official sponsor of the seven's tournament in South Africa and has avidly supported seven's rugby for 20 years.
Emirates, together with the IRB, has played an integral role in the development of sevens rugby and the tournament's global profile. This year the tournament generated the largest television audience to date and the highest spectator figures in the history of the event. Emirates' involvement in the game continues with the sponsorship of the London and the Edinburgh Sevens, as well as being the shirt sponsor of the England and Samoan Sevens squads.
The South African Tournament, held at the Outeniqua Stadium, entertained spectators with the highest level of the game, as the world's top rugby sevens nations competed for the title. The teams from around the globe were a true representation of the world's most respected international rugby players. In the spirit of rugby, teams took their honorary laps around the pitch to cheers of support. New Zealand closed the tournament with a victorious Haka for an elated crowd.
In the other matches during the weekend, Wales took home the Bowl Trophy in a tight match against England and the Plate Trophy was won triumphantly by Kenya over USA.
