Festive fair lights up Ljubljana this December Visitors to Slovenia’s compact, picturesque capital, Ljubljana, will be able to enjoy the sights, sounds and seasonal aromas of its festive Christmas market between 3 December and 2 January 2009. Located in the old city centre, around fifty market stalls line the embankment and snake through the cobbled streets and across the main Prešernovtrg square, each one decked with ribbons, mistletoe and thousands of festive lights, illuminating the capital’s already atmospheric historic quarter.

Between 10am and 8pm each day, visitors will find a wide variety of high quality gifts on sale such as beautiful, hand crafted candles, wooden toys, local craftwork including handmade clothes and designer jewellery, plus mouth watering seasonal treats, traditional biscuits, spiced mulled wine and warming gluhwein.

Away from the market Ljubljana’s Old Town features a picturesque river, cobbled streets dotted with quaint squares and interesting shops, a colourful food market, wide choice of restaurants and mix of Baroque, Art Nouveau and 20th century architecture. No trip to the city would be complete without taking a funicular ride up to the mediaeval hilltop castle, the site of which was inhabited back in the 12th century BC, to enjoy panoramic views over Ljubljana and beyond.

Specialist tour operator, Just Slovenia is offering two-night Christmas market breaks from £299 per person based on two sharing and includes return flights from Stansted, transfers and bed and breakfast accommodation at the centrally-located Pri Mraku Guesthouse.
