There is something to cater for everyone at the Edinburgh Winter Festival, including parades, fireworks, and luxury markets, so whether you want family fun, a romantic break with your partner, or to visit with a group of friends, there is plenty to keep you busy – and it’s so easy to travel to, so you don’t need to fight the maddening crowds at your local airport. It’s no surprise then that Edinburgh has been voted the top UK city seven years in a row, by Guardian and Observer readers.
The fun kicks off on Thursday, November 22, with Light Night, when the giant Norwegian Christmas tree is lit in Princes Street Gardens and the city’s Christmas lights are switched on, followed by fireworks and an ice show. This year in additional to the traditional German market stalls serving warming gluhwein and selling traditional gifts, there is also a Scottish market, selling top-notch local produce and handicrafts, perfect for Christmas gifts.
Over the following weeks, there is an array of outdoor performances, concerts, and exhibitions, including the famous Santa Run, as the entire city pulls together to make the holiday season a success.
The Edinburgh Winter Festival culminates with a four-day extravaganza around New Year’s, including the famous Torchlight Procession, candlelit concert in St Giles Cathedral, ceildh, rocking Street Party, and the concert in the Princes Street Gardens, that has featured top acts like the Scissor Sisters in past years. This year’s acts will be announced by the end of October.
It’s no wonder that Edinburgh is considered one of the best places in the world to see in New Year’s Eve. And if you’re tough or crazy enough, you can always try the Loony Dook on New Year’s Day and join hundreds of crazy people in dipping in the freezing waters on the banks of the First of Forth.
Edinburgh has the best of both worlds – magical scenery and it’s easy to get around, unlike some larger hotspots, so it’s the perfect hassle-free winter break.
