Surf your way through Christmas Ever thought about learning how to surf? With around 500 000 enthusiasts in the UK alone, surf is one of the largest growing sports worldwide. Even stars like Cameron Diaz and Matthew McConaughey are aficionados of this truly exciting adventure sport.

A great way to keep in shape and stay fit, surfing is all about fun and it is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. People often get a taste of it and never look back, being absorbed by the whole lifestyle.

Yes, it does take dedication and patience to become an experienced surfer, but, like with everything else, one must start somewhere! A few lessons with a qualified coach is the best way to ensure your entry into this new adventure is done in a safe and efficient manner.

So, what are you waiting for? Why not start this Christmas, just in time for a brand New Year? Miguel Almeida Academia de Surf (MAAS) will be running a 4-day workshop between the 20th and 23rd of December where you can learn this sport from basics or even improve your existing surfing skills.

A fifteen minutes drive from the gorgeous Portuguese capital’s city centre, Lisbon, the workshop will take place in one of the numerous beaches of Costa da Caparica, where waves and the fine sand beaches are ideal for surf beginners. With average temperatures for both sea and air of around 15C at this time of the year, it is the perfect excuse to get a bit of Winter sun!

Classes are taught and co-ordinated by Miguel Almeida himself, who has been a surf coach since 1996. Responsible for the Surf Coach courses on behalf of the Portuguese Surf Federation since 1998, more than 80% of all existing Portuguese surf coaches have graduated under Miguel’s supervision. Having specialized in High-Performance Training, Miguel Almeida is a Physical Education graduate and coaches athletes up to the competition level.

The 4-day workshop will consist of eight sessions (two per day), and its cost is €100, including material (surfboard and wetsuit).

With regards to accommodation and gastronomy, MAAS will be more than happy in advising and pointing towards the local amenities, according to personal preferences.

Costa da Caparica is well equipped with all kinds of accommodation, from camping sites with bungalows to B&Bs and hotels, and it is renowned for its fish and seafood restaurants.
