Flybe celebrates 1st anniversary of fair deal on baggage

15th December 2006 Print
Flybe is celebrating the success of its Fair Deal on Baggage initiative pioneered by the airline back in December 2005.

Since its inception a year ago, the innovative move by Flybe has undone an historical inequity in which the cost of handling baggage had been spread across all travellers, regardless of how much baggage they brought on board.

Despite some other airlines insisting that they would not be following suit, twelve months on, easyJet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus, BMI Baby and yesterday BA have all recognized the success of the Fair Deal on Baggage model and have followed the precedent set by Flybe by introducing their own baggage charges.

The most recent announcement by BA further indicates Flybe’s Fair Deal on Baggage business model is the future of the industry, consolidating Flybe’s position as a leader in the low cost carrier sector. Flybe is pleased that BA has acknowledged this position and recognized the benefits for the consumer.

Mike Rutter, Chief Commercial Officer, Flybe, comments: “Flybe is a pioneer in the low cost sector and introduced hold baggage charges as the next logical step for this vibrant part of the aviation industry. A year on, the model has proved extremely successful and has set a standard in the aviation industry which others have emulated in order to keep up with the changing face of the sector.

“Until the introduction of the Flybe Fair Deal on Baggage back in 2005 the cost of handling baggage had been spread across all travellers, regardless of how much baggage they brought on board. By introducing the Flybe Fair Deal on Baggage we extended our fair and transparent pricing strategy. We are delighted that other airlines have followed our initiative and finally recognised that this is the way forward to benefit the consumer."
