Forty days of rain - Its time to get away to the sun

17th July 2007 Print
As folklore would have us believe, as it rained on the 15th July we are destined to have 40 more days of continuous rain! St Swithun has the reputation as a weather saint due to the delay in moving his body from its lowly grave to its golden shrine within the Cathedral due to incessant rain!

The rhyme of St Swithun is:

St. Swithun's day, if thou dost rain,
For forty days it will remain;
St. Swithun's day, if thou be fair,
For forty days 'twill rain na mair.
