Huka Lodge, the best resort hotel in New Zealand?

19th January 2007 Print
Huka Lodge New Zealand The latest edition of The Gallivanter’s Guide has named Huka Lodge, Taupo, New Zealand as the Best Hotel/Resort in Australia and New Zealand. No other resort or lodge scored sufficient reader’s votes to merit inclusion, and to quote the publication “you have plumped for the oldest and most famous lodge, ignoring the new breed that, these days, springs up as regularly as African safari lodges”.

The 2006 Gallivanter’s Award’s for Excellence are the result of an annual reader’s poll. The Gallivanter’s Guide is an 8-page, privately published, subscriber-only newsletter. It was established in the United Kingdom in 1991 with the aim of unearthing idyllic places for the dedicated traveller. It has subscribers in over 42 countries and operates like a private member’s club.

Further recognition from the United Kingdom came when Condé Nast Traveller magazine named Huka Lodge as the highest scoring property (with 97.78 out of a possible 100) in the Best Hotels for Rooms in Australasia and South Pacific section of their annual Gold List. Illustrations of the luxurious Owner’s Cottage rooms accompanied the award.

Huka Lodge is the vision of owner Alex van Heeren and currently has two other sister properties, Dolphin Island, Fiji and Grande Provence Estate in South Africa.
