Finest wines in Caribbean found on Antigua

1st February 2007 Print
Curtain Bluff Resort - Antigua The Caribbean is not necessarily a region where you would expect to find fine wines as most people associate it with rum and heady cocktails and punches. However Curtain Bluff, the effortlessly glamorous resort in Antigua, has recently extended it’s wine cellar to make it not only the largest in the Caribbean but probably the best!

Howard Hulford, a former World War 2 Mustang pilot who founded the resort in 1962 , also set up his own wine import company to make sure he could always supply Curtain Bluff’s guests with the finest wines. Now the new extension to the cellar means Caribbean holidaymakers can choose from 25,000 bottles and also take part in tastings in a new tasting area that has been added to the subterranean cellar, the ideal place to spend time sampling fine vintages out of the hot Antiguan sun!

The Curtain Bluff wine cellar now boasts a huge selection of wines from classic favourites to rare vintages (eg Chateau Petrus 1996, Chateau Latour, 1988 ). At the weekly tastings guests can learn more about the world of wine from the hugely knowlegeable hotel somelliers George Williams and Clive Dean who are both from the nearby village of Old Road. Both men have worked at the hotel for over 18 years and during this time Curtain Bluff has supported their extensive training in the vineyards of Bordeaux, Burgundy and California.

Since it opened Curtain Bluff’s dedication to the training of its staff along with the luxurious accomodation and extensive facilities offered, has set the standard for excellence throughout the Caribbean. The resort, surrounded by vibrant tropical gardens, offers beautiful, white sand beaches, a multitude of water sports, professionally staffed tennis facility, squash courts and gym combined with top cuisine and the world class wine cellar.

Caribtours (caribtours.co.uk) offers one week at Curtain Bluff from £1,997 per person on an all inclusive basis including return World Traveller flights on British Airways or Economy flights on Virgin Atlantic and transfers.
