Its History Week in Nevis, West Indies

Specialist travel operator, Barbados and Caribbean Journeys, announces its 'History Week' at the Montpelier Plantation Inn, Nevis, West Indies, in a relaxing and informative seven-night tour starting on 21 October, 2007.

Providing ‘An Introduction to the History of Nevis’, the tour gives a fascinating insight into the workings of a sugar plantation and also reveals many of the island’s historical gems. On the Sunday (arrival day from Gatwick), guests unwind with a welcome dinner in the 18th century sugar mill at Montpelier Plantation Inn.

Monday features ‘Nevis orientation’ for the week’s activity ahead, with a walk and explanation of two historic plantations, New River and Coconut Walk, followed by lunch at the botanical gardens and, later, dinner on the terrace at Montpelier.

On Tuesday, guests partake in the Nevis Island Tour, visiting: St Georges church, Eden Brown, which is believed to be a haunted estate; St James church with its black crucifix; Cottle church, an early integrated place of worship; and Fort Coddrington - one of the original forts protecting Nevis from the French. This is followed by lunch at Montpelier’s beach and, later in the day, rum tasting and dinner.

Wednesday brings a visit to St Kitts by ferry, taking in: the National Museum; Wingfield sugar ruins; Romney Manor with its local batik workshop and gardens; Brimstone Hill (a world heritage site), and Estridge Mausoleum and church on the Atlantic side. Lunch is at a plantation inn.

Thursday is based around a dig at Bush Hill, as part of the discovery of this old plantation. The day includes a discussion on plants, foods and local cooking, followed by dinner.

Friday features a visit to the Nelson Museum and archives, a walking tour of Charlestown, and then on to the Museum of Nevis History. The evening is time for drinks on the grounds of Montpelier House, followed by dinner prepared on the courtyard barbeque.

The weekend continues with a free day on Saturday, followed by a farewell dinner in the sugar mill. Guests depart on Sunday after breakfast.

The tour departs 18 or 19 October and costs £2,999 per person for double room occupancy and £4,600 for single room occupancy.
