Eco-conscious tourism in Florida’s Key West

1st October 2007 Print
Two Key West properties have become the first in the Florida Keys to be awarded Green Lodging Certificates for their environmental commitment and eco-conscious lodging facilities - and many others are following suit.

The Banyan Resort and the Gardens Hotel, both based in the Old Town of Key West, are the first certified members of the Green Lodging Program, created by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to establish guidelines for the adoption of cost-effective practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources.

Properties are evaluated in categories including water and energy conservation, waste reduction, indoor air quality and communication of green practices to guests. The properties must also show their individual goals for continued improvements which can earn them further green certifications.

The Banyan Resort, whose grounds feature two magnificent and venerable banyan trees, supports the environment through a towel and linen reuse program, a recycling program, energy conservation through solar roof panels for pool heating and high-efficiency compact florescent lighting, and purchasing products with recycled content such as plastic lumber used for courtyard decking. Rooms start from as little as $150 (£75) per night.

Rich in history and architecture, the Gardens Hotel offers guest education on the property’s environmental policy. Recycling is one of the predominant themes communicated and, on arrival, guests are provided with their own lightweight recycled and refillable water flasks, eliminating the need to purchase plastic bottles of water.

Further initiatives include an automatic door closer and energy-efficient garden pump and low-flow taps to conserve water and energy. The owner of the resort has even purchased four electric cars for staff to use when running errands around Key West. Rooms start from as little as $160 (£80) per night.
