If you are heading for Hertfordshire, the Pengethley Manor Hotel is certain to send a chill down your spine. The Ross-on-Wye hotel has had a resident ghost since 1916 – a young female called Harriet who died in a fire. There have been several sightings by both staff and guests, although the history behind her hauntings remains a mystery. Find out for yourself, and take part in the 2-4-1 offer this weekend – stay one night and get the second night free.
Dating back to Georgian times, the stunning Pengethley Manor is steeped in history. Now a three star hotel, the elegant Georgian house is set in 15 acres overlooking National Trust parkland. The original house was built in 1544 and parts of the original estate, such as the sunken cellars, can still be seen today.
Star-crossed lovers
The Best Western Walworth Castle, Darlington, has two resident ghosts caught in a love story to rival Romeo and Juliet. According to legend, two teenagers fell in love at the castle – the daughter of the Lord who owned the castle and the stable boy. They were forbidden to see each other and were subsequently killed. Now, the boy is said to haunt the stables, while the girl is rumoured to be buried in the walls of room 16, haunting whoever stays there.
Set on 18 acres of lawns and woodlands, and just three miles from the A1(M), the Best Western Walworth Castle has a unique blend of 12th century charm with 21st century facilities. With four poster tower suites, double Jacuzzi baths, an award-winning restaurant and a traditional Farmer’s Bar with a real log fire, you’ll be sure to have spooktacular stay.
Going bump in the night
Alice, a wronged servant, makes the ladies’ hair stand on end at the Best Western Lion hotel, Worksop. Disturbed when the building underwent renovations, Alice can be heard walking on the floorboards near her regular haunt, room 201 on the first floor. According to the hotel owners, the 20-year old serving girl, was unlucky in love and was driven to suicide. Today, she resides at the hotel and appears only to female staff and guests. Look out for her from the bedroom window on frosty mornings.
Located in the centre of Worksop, the Best Western Lion Hotel is close to Clumber Park and the beautiful Sherwood Forest.
