One of Edinburgh’s most elegant hotels is to benefit from a £7.5m makeover, cementing its position as the city’s top luxury four-star hotel. The Roxburghe Hotel, in the city’s stylish Charlotte Square, is undergoing extensive refurbishment over the next 18 months, creating luxurious bedrooms and suites, plus a £1.7m redevelopment of the public areas to offer a new contemporary restaurant and bar areas.

Other features of the refurbishment will see the creation of a new entrance on George Street and Charlotte Square, new lounges and reception area, and enhanced conference, concierge and in-room facilities.

General Manager, Chris Wayne-Wills, commented: “This is a significant investment which will help to reposition The Roxburghe as one of the top hotels in Edinburgh. I believe its growing reputation for good food, personal and intuitive service, combined with this substantial investment in facilities, all delivered by an exceptional group of employees, will undoubtedly be good for business, and good for attracting more people to the city.”

Work is now underway on phase one of the project which will see the complete transformation of the existing 198 bedrooms to create 144 rooms with sumptuous furnishings and décor, 50 larger rooms, and five stylish suites, all with air conditioning. A range of unique packages will be developed to complement these rooms, such as butler service, executive lounges and private check- in.

Subject to planning permission, the 300 sq metre central atrium will be removed and the entire roof enclosed by glass, providing natural light by day and a stunning atmosphere at night, creating a contemporary location to enjoy afternoon teas and drinks.

All the hotel’s public areas, including the reception and concierge area and lounge will be refurbished using contemporary, stylish furnishings to create warm and welcoming areas for guests to relax.

Leading onto Rose Street, a new conference and banqueting reception area will be created, complete with a hospitality area and three meeting rooms, capable of holding more than 200 people.

Chris Wayne-Wills, said: “With its strategic position in the city The Roxburghe has always been a popular and much valued destination. We believe it is the time to build on this long-standing reputation to create a very stylish, contemporary and service-led hotel that the city can be proud of. The substantial investment in leisure, conference and meeting facilities will ensure these facilities are among the best in the capital.

“We are also working closely with guests who have booked meetings and functions at the Roxburghe over the time of the refurbishment to ensure that their events are not disrupted in any way.”

Established in the early 1800’s and designed by Robert Adam in what is now a World Heritage Site, The Roxburghe is owned by the Paragon Group and managed by Macdonald Hotels & Resorts.
