Diners wanting to try Hungarian food in London are limited to only a handful of places, which is why the four-star Danubius Hotel Regents Park is hosting its ‘Taste of Hungarian Cuisine’ evenings from 12-14 June.Guests will be treated to a four course dinner in the hotel’s elegant Minsky Restaurant where they can choose from a wide variety of dishes including traditional soups, stuffed pancakes and meat strudel’s as well as the famous ‘Hungarian beef goulash’, ‘roast pork with mushroom ragout’ and ‘fried chicken with paprika’. Vegetarians are also catered for with a selection of dishes including ‘gnocchi with dill and ewe’s cheese’ and ‘potato cake with onion’.
The four course menu costs £24 per person and guests will also get the chance to hear some traditional Hungarian gipsy music whilst they eat – making for a truly authentic Hungarian experience. And diners can wash their dinner down with some superb Hungarian wines. Hungary has a long tradition of wine making dating back to before the Romans and has 22 wine regions. The restaurant has an extensive wine list including the well-known white dessert wine ‘Tokaji’ other Hungarian red and white wines.
Despite London being one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world with the opportunity to eat many different world cuisines, finding Hungarian cuisine in the capital is hard and most people know very little about the food of this small Central European nation.
Hungarian food is traditionally hearty and spicy with a wide variety of stews, soups and sauces and the Hungarian’s are famous for their delicious desserts and cakes. Influences come from the many nations that have played their part in Hungarian history including the Turkish, Austrians, Italians and Germans.
