Fujairah resort launches ultimate chill-out zone
As part of a $2 million beach rejuvenation program, Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah has launched the Gonu Bar & Grill, an outdoor lounge and dining area overlooking the Indian Ocean. The informal restaurant was named after the Sanskrit meaning of Gonu, which is palm leaf, reflecting the relaxed, thatched, barasti-style ambience of the Gonu Bar & Grill. The name also pays homage to Gonu, the cyclone which struck the East Coast on June 5th, 2007, causing significant damage to the resort’s beachfront.
“As yet, Fujairah has lacked a laid-back, oceanside central meeting point for both guests and visitors to grab a bite and enjoy the water views, so we decided to create Gonu. It offers stunning views, and a relaxed dining for guests, as an alternative to the international cuisine offered in our Swaad, Views and Taste restaurants,” said Patrick Antaki, General Manager, Le Méridien Al Aqah.
“Although the resort was hit hard by Cyclone Gonu, we have completely bounced back and it provided us with the opportunity to implement a beach makeover. We have also installed changing pavilions along the beach, hi-tech beach umbrellas featuring WI-FI call buttons for instant waiter service and we are now reaping the rewards of the 100 coconut palms which were planted after the cyclone,” added Antaki.
Baywatch Village Chef David Miras created Gonu’s menu to please the most discerning food-lovers, offering BBQ with a twist. The menu includes a selection of starters, sandwiches, grills and small bites for lunch; and grilled seafood and meats for dinner. A refreshing selection of fresh juices features in the drinks menu, as well an extensive range of mixed beverages.
“Our aim is for the guests to relax outdoors and enjoy the changing ocean view and cool breeze along the beach so the menu features tried and tested favorites such as Baywatch sandwiches. There is a fresh seafood display during the dinner period and guests can see their meals prepared before their eyes in the open kitchen,” said Miras.
In addition to its thatched roof and 360 degree beach views, Gonu also offers cozy FatBoy beanbags for more informal seating, as well as entertainment, with a Scratch Band on Thursdays and Disco on Fridays.
Gonu Bar & Grill has no dress code and no reservations are required. It is open for lunch daily from 12pm to 5pm and for dinner from 7pm to 11pm. The bar is open throughout the day, from 12pm to 11pm.
