Setting hearts racing in the Maldives
The Maldives has long been synonymous with honeymooning couples enjoying candlelit dinners and strolling moonlit beaches. However for those who want more than just romance, the newly opened Iru Fushi Beach & Spa Resort, has an exciting range of activities to provide additional adventure and get the adrenaline flowing. Iru Fushi is a fabulous new hideaway set on a tropical island surrounded by powdery white beaches north of Malé. Located in the Noonu Atoll, it is reached by a 45-minute scenic seaplane transfer.
One of the activities on offer is kite surfing. From US$45 for one hour, the relatively shallow lagoon and soft sandy beaches surrounding Iru Fushi makes it the perfect place to learn this new and adventurous sport. If this isn’t cutting-edge enough, wakeboarding definitely will be. From US$40 for 15 minutes, it’s a stylish mixture of water skiing, surfing and snowboarding that is guaranteed to cause a splash. Underwater, the diving is superb for beginners and experienced divers alike. The corals are magnificent and there is an abundance of marine species including turtles, sharks, barracuda and Manta rays. From US$49 for a single dive, the well-equipped PADI Gold Palm dive school has everything from PADI courses to Nitrox dives.
Back on the surface, sailing along on a catamaran in a stiff breeze is about as different to reading a book on the beach as it gets, especially for those who feel brave enough to get out on the trapeze. From US$40 for one hour, this is a brilliant way of getting a very different view of the island.
If all this activity works up an appetite, then there’s the opportunity of big game fishing. From US$1,000 for a half day, guests set off early in the morning and have breakfast on board one of the resort’s fully equipped fishing boats as the sun rises. Excellent quantities of Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Barracuda and Jackfish have been recorded around the Noonu Atoll and the chefs are more than happy to cook up guests’ catches and serve it as a sumptuous lunch!
