Indian Test Cricketer to coach at La Manga Club
Legendary Indian wicketkeeper and batsman Farokh Engineer will be passing on his much-celebrated skills to a new generation of cricketers at La Manga Club, southern Spain, from April 25-27.Engineer will be at the resort running a series of coaching sessions alongside Madrid Cricket Club’s second Solidarity Twenty20 cricket tournament where the Spanish side will compete with the seven other teams from Spain, England and the Netherlands.
Now an umpire for the Indian Premier League, Engineer enjoyed a 15-year cricket career which saw him line up as wicket keeper for Lancashire and Mumbai as well as playing 46 tests for India. He also earned a reputation as a stylish and aggressive batsman.
Places on the coaching sessions are available for €20 per person for a one-hour session and all bookings must be made in advance. All proceeds will go to Engineer’s charity for homeless children in Mumbai and the tournament’s fundraising effort.
The tournament at La Manga Club has the full backing of Cricket España, which will use it as a showcase event to highlight the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ – an initiative designed to ensure that cricket is always played in a truly sportsmanlike manner – and also to mark the centenary of the ICC.
The staging of the tournament further cements La Manga Club’s standing as the ‘home of cricket in Spain’, following the addition of two regulation club turf pitches and four full length nets at the venue.
County and international sides have chosen the resort for their training base on many occasions with the outstanding cricket facilities just part of the overall attraction of Europe’s number-one sports and leisure resort.
La Manga Club also runs a series of popular ‘In-Touch’ junior cricket academies during school holiday periods.
