Madeira gears up for the Atlantic Festival

The Atlantic Festival takes place each weekend throughout June and is a celebration of music, entertainment and culture. It has three components: the Madeira Music Festival, the International Fireworks Competition and performances by philharmonic bands in the city centre.

One of the highlights is the International Fireworks competition where various countries compete to win the coveted position of sponsoring the world famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Funchal harbour. The fireworks displays promise to be breathtaking and are all coordinated to music. The fireworks take place every Saturday night in June.

The rest of the festivities are made up of a selection concerts including classical music performances which are held at important sites in the region, such as Teatro Municipal Balthazar Dias, Casa das Mudas and several churches.
