A culinary journey at the Majestic Malacca
The Peranakan Culinary Journey is the first-of-its-kind cooking class organised by the Hotel, which allows guests to immerse themselves in the rich and unique Peranakan culture, and learn about the Peranakan way of life through first-hand preparation of its cuisine.
This is the first time The Majestic Malacca is opening its kitchen doors to share the secrets behind the creation of exquisite Peranakan food with its guests. Hosted by Malaysian Peranakan Chef Kenny Chan, a popular Malaysian entertainer and well-loved chef, guests will enjoy an interactive cooking class followed by a sampling of each dish prepared.
Panch Ratnavale, Hotel Manager at The Majestic Malacca said, “The Majestic Malacca constantly strives to bring our guests unique and memorable experiences. A visit to Malacca would be incomplete without savouring its local specialties, in addition to visiting the historical sites. There is no better way to explore Malacca’s colourful history than to experience creating your own Peranakan dishes under the guidance of an authentic homegrown chef. Through an introduction to the aromatic ingredients which contribute to each Nyonya specialty, one can begin to find out more about the rich history behind each dish that they learn to cook.”
Through The Peranakan Culinary Journey, guests will learn to cook Peranakan specialties such as Pie Tee, Nyonya Kuih, Ayam Pongteh, Otak-Otak and Itik Tim; as well as a range of colorful cakes like Pulut Tai Tai, Onde-Onde and Kuih Lapis. At the end of the class, they can enjoy a food tasting session and take home a piece of the Peranakan experience in the form of classic recipes. The session costs RM250/£43 per person and 24 hours’ notice is required for bookings. Kids under the age of 12 can join in the cooking class at no additional charge.
The Peranakan cooking class is the latest addition to a wide range of culturally-based activities available to guests at The Majestic Malacca. Besides cooking classes, the hotel is concurrently offering a spa and high-tea promotion, A Day of Indulgence, available for a limited period from 15 July to 31 December 2009 at just RM180/£31 per person. The experience begins at Spa Village Malacca with the Hair Ritual, inspired by traditional Peranakan weddings, followed by a body, face or hair treatment of your choice. The afternoon of indulgence continues at The Lounge with a sumptuous high tea that offers a selection of the finest teas in the world.
