Air France announces commitment to the environment

26th June 2008 Print
In an aim to combat climate change and considering that the destruction of forests accounts for some 20% of CO2 manmade emissions, Air France finances a GoodPlanet-run project to fight against deforestation in Madagascar. The project is implemented locally by WWF-Madagascar.

Thanks to the signature by all the stakeholders in June 2008, this project aiming to protect and restore 500,000 hectares of forest should be locally implemented early in July 2008. 60 to 70 million tons of sequestered carbon could be potentially protected.

This project aims to protect and restore 500,000 hectares of forest, representing 60 to 70 million tons of potentially protected sequestered carbon.

Furthermore, in order to reduce its gas emissions and reach the 2012 target of bringing fuel consumption down to 3.7 litres per passenger per 100km, Air France is leveraging different areas, notably:

- investing in a modern fleet (Air France has one of the world's youngest long-haul fleets);

- a network structured around hubs in order to use bigger aircraft which require less fuel consumption per passenger;

- optimized air traffic management procedures (taxiing with one or both engines shut down, continuous descent, etc.)
