Brits lacking romance this Valentine’s Day

7th February 2008 Print
Valentine’s Day looks set to be a let down this year as a new survey reveals almost two thirds of Brits expect to be disappointed by their loved one. The survey by alpharooms.com found that 61 per cent expect to be disappointed with their Valentine’s gifts, with around a third (32 per cent) receiving nothing from their partners.

Clichéd favourites such as tacky underwear, cheap perfume and flowers from the garage were anticipated amongst women questioned, whilst men await the usual meal at an overpriced restaurant - which they’ll be expected to pay for.

On the contrary, the gift most people (56%) would like to receive is a romantic weekend away with their loved one.

Alpharooms.com, the UK’s leading provider of online accommodation, is urging the British public to make an effort this Valentine’s Day and make any gesture, large or small, to let their partners know just how appreciated they are.

Sarah Beale, from Alpharooms.com, said: “We used an online survey to find out what Brits would most like to receive on Valentine’s Day, compared to what they expected to receive.

“We also split the results according to gender and the feedback proved to be very interesting.

“It was surprising to see that the majority of people expected to receive nothing at all on Valentine’s Day, and it seems that as a nation we’re still not very imaginative with our gifts as women still expect to receive unwanted clichés like tacky underwear and men dread having to fork out for an expensive meal.

“Both genders mostly craved a romantic weekend or break with their loved one (56%) or a gesture such as a romantic meal for two (18%).”

Despite this year being a leap year, when women are traditionally encouraged to break with tradition and propose to their partner, four per cent of women quizzed are hoping to be asked the big question next week.

The survey also found that Brits are all old romantics at heart with 40 per cent not stating a preference for their ideal romantic getaway, just as long as they were with the person they love.

The next best thing for men would be a luscious beach break whilst women preferred the prospect of an action-packed city break with their loved one.

Flowers and chocolates are still up there as being popular Valentine’s gifts, with more unusual responses including fitness equipment and antique ornaments.

And finally, just spare a thought for the lucky lady whose partner stated his ideal Valentine’s Day would consist of him hitting the ski slopes whilst she remained at home…
