London is the top destination for Brits this Easter

The long Easter weekend is the perfect time for a city trip this Spring. Hotel price comparison site trivago.co.uk has investigated the most popular European destinations this Easter based on search enquiries throughout March. London tops the chart for the second year in a row, closely followed by Paris.

London is the top destination for Brits and is the ideal place for couples and families this Easter. Average hotel prices are 119 pounds over the Easter weekend. There are many Easter egg hunts going on around London on Easter Sunday, trivago recommends Kew Gardens or the London Bridge Experience for something a little different. A night at the theatre is also a good option this Easter, current productions include, Billy Elliott, The Lion King and Hairspray.

Paris is the second choice for Brits and the most expensive top ten destination: a double room costs an average of 120 pounds over Easter. There are numerous activities to do around Easter including attending a church service at the Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, or Madeline. trivago travellers also suggest a trip to the Grand Palais where a new exhibition features over 150 of Andy Warhol's most famous pieces of artwork.

Rome is the third most popular destination this Easter, the average price for a double room is 109 pounds. Easter is one of the busiest times as thousands of Catholics flock to Rome from around the world. St Peters Square in the Vatican City is the place to be on Easter Sunday to hear the speech from Pope Benedict XVI. To experience something a little different, the trivago community recommends Villa Borghese. This park in the centre of Rome features several museums, monuments, fountains and gardens.

Barcelona follows Rome and with temperatures up to 22 degrees celcius is a great option for a weekend break this Spring. Average hotel prices are 93 pounds and the trivago community suggests that travellers take a stroll down Las Ramblas and visit Collserola Park which is located in the centre of Barcelona. Collserola Park releases 60,000 metric tons of oxygen every year and contains over ten million trees, 1,000 different species of plants making it the largest city park in the world.

Berlin is the fifth most popular destination for Brits this year and the cheapest at 86 pounds per night. trivago recommends visiting the East Side Gallery, an open air exhibition which displays artwork painted directly on remaining parts of the Berlin Wall. A trip to Berlin zoo is also a great day out for the whole family.

Madrid (95 pounds) is in sixth place this year and is followed by Amsterdam where a room costs an average of 104 pounds this Easter. Venice and Vienna are the eighth and ninth: a double room costs 109 and 103 pounds respectively. Edinburgh just makes it into the top ten this year at 94 pounds per night. The average price for a room in Edinburgh over the past six months was 104 pounds.

In other European countries, the United Kingdom remains a cheap option for travellers over Easter due to the weak pound, however many travellers are looking to stay in their home country. The top destination for the Italians is Rome, where a standard double room costs 109 pounds. Berlin is the most popular destination for the Germans and Paris is the top destination for the French.
