Easter Destination: Thailand

15th February 2007 Print
It’s cold and damp outside, so if you’re dreaming of slipping away somewhere brighter for Easter, look no further than the sun-drenched beaches of Ko Samet, Thailand.

Where is it?

The six-kilometre island is located 72 kms southeast of Pattaya, making it an easy option from Bangkok.

How to get there?

Two hour road transfer from Bangkok to Pattaya followed by easy boat ride to reach the island (approx. 30 minutes).

Where to stay?

For years the unspoiled island hideaway for Bangkok's trendy set, is moving upmarket. The opening of new luxury hotels (Paradee Resort) and upgrades of existing resorts (Le Vimarn Resort, Ao Phrao Resort, Sai Kaew Resort, Mooban Talay Resort to name a few) is quickly ending Samet's reputation as an inexpensive laid-back idyll.

What to do?

Ko Samet was declared a national park in 1981 and the islands interior is dense jungle, home of hornbills, gibbons and butterflies. Snorkelling, diving and fishing opportunities are abundant in the nearby islands of Ko Kudi, Ko Thalu and Ko Mun.

What to look out for?

The fine sand beaches on the east coast. Hat Sai Kaew being the most popular and busiest beach - it's shore is lined with bungalows, restaurants, beachwear stalls etc.
