Devon cottages attract increased Easter visitors

20th March 2008 Print
A recent survey of tourism businesses in the South West found that the majority were reporting an anticipated decrease in the number of visitors booking with them for the Easter period in comparison with last year; however, leading self catering cottages agency Coast & Country Cottages has this week announced a 14% increase in the value of its bookings compared to the Easter/school holiday period in 2007.

Recent reports have put the poor Easter figures down to the holiday period falling earlier, complicated school holidays as many school are only taking the long weekend at Easter this year and then having a separate 2 week break in April. Finally, the recent damp spell and the forecast of colder weather for the Easter Break has had a further negative impact on visitor numbers to the South West.

Karen Jones, Partner at Coast & Country Cottages explained, “We are delighted with our figures for this year but we have had to work incredibly hard to achieve our bookings for Easter 08. Whilst the region traditionally attracts a significant number of holidaymakers from across the UK at this time, we knew Easter this year would be a challenging time.

“Devon is one of the most picturesque places in the UK to holiday, with stunning unspoilt beaches and miles of coastal paths to explore, picturesque towns including Salcombe and Dartmouth, boasting art galleries, boutiques and great water sports as well as a whole host of good restaurants and locally produced food, to enjoy.

“Devon does have something for all seasons as our figures are now showing, with an increase in couples visiting the area in early spring and late autumn in addition to its huge popularity as a Summer family seaside holiday destination. Easter might not be as successful as last year for the region as a whole, but with more and more visitors coming to the South West throughout the year, we hope this will have a positive impact on the tourism industry as a whole.”

Coast & Country Cottages has nearly 400 properties available exclusively in the South Hams, including many fabulous new luxury properties in Salcombe, Dartmouth and throughout the area.
