Explore contemporary Germany
Brandenburg not only offers beautiful scenery just outside Berlin but also German-German history first hand. Explore the Wall Trail with a total length of 160 km, Cecilienhof Palace where the Potsdam Conference was held in 1945 or the bunkers of the National Army.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Wall next year, Brandenburg Tourism is offering guided tours for groups and individuals giving visitors an insight into everyday life in the former GDR. Moreover, there will also be numerous events and festivals to celebrate the anniversary such as a folk festival on the “Glienicker Brücke” bridge, symbol of the division between East and West, on 10 November 2009.
Traces of the Cold War tour in Potsdam
This tour takes visitors along the inner German border in Potsdam and demonstrates the impact of the Wall on Berlin and Brandenburg. Sights include the “Glienicker Brücke” which became famous because of the spectacular spy swaps between East and West Germany taking place here and the villas in Babelsberg where the participants of the Potsdam Conference resided in 1945.
Group bookings possible all year for EUR 193 Euro (10 to 30 persons).
Brandenburg bunkers tour
How about exploring a state secret? The bunkers in the east of Brandenburg including a nuclear bunker in Harnekop for the leaders of the National Army were one of the best kept secrets of the GDR. Visitors can experience the very special atmosphere created by the enormous dimensions of the bunkers for EUR 63 per person.
Everyday GDR life in Eisenhüttenstadt
The city structure of Eisenhüttenstadt is a classic example of socialistic settlement patterns in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Apart from a general tour of the city, the documentation centre on everyday culture in former Eastern Germany presents on 400 m² everything that had a significance in everyday GDR life, such as electronic equipment, clothes and furniture all in typical GDR design. The tour can be booked at EUR 15 per person.
