Cosy cottages for autumn breaks

7th October 2009 Print

Minimalist chic is all very well, but it is good to come home to a cosy cottage after a day on the fells. And if you can dry your socks– as well as the dog – in front of a roaring fire, it is even better!

Rascal Howe on the edge of Coniston village is definitely not minimalist, says Cumbrian Cottages. It is a traditional stone terrace with Lakeland slate and beams galore plus a feature fireplace, while the scent from the hop-vine on the stairs ensures sweet dreams.

With lake views and walks – including the Old Man of Coniston – from the front door, Rascal Howe sleeps up to four and boasts a luxurious bathroom and hand-crafted kitchen. A three-night break in November or December* costs £260, plus £15 for a well-behaved hound.

In a similar vein, the open-plan living area at Osprey Cottage boasts a large fire and oak beams while two cosy bedrooms tucked into the eaves sleep four.

There are breathtaking views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Catbells, while the wood behind the cottage is full of deer and red squirrels. A three night break in November or December* costs £210, plus £15 for the family dog.
