Malta offers Eurozone value

29th May 2009 Print

Malta is one of the best value Eurozone destinations, according to the latest Holiday Cost Barometer, issued by the Post Office this month. The survey of 18 popular holiday destinations across the globe reveals that Malta offers some of the best value for money in the Eurozone, sliding in at third place just behind Spain and Portugal.

The rise of the Euro against Sterling this year has meant that all too often the Eurozone has been branded an expensive holiday destination. Yet the Holiday Cost Barometer reveals that prices within the Eurozone vary greatly and that Malta offers exceptional value within it – and even works out less expensive than certain popular non-Eurozone destinations.

According to the Holiday Cost Barometer Malta is 14.8% more competitive than Cyprus for the same basket of popular holiday items. It is also 1.5% cheaper than Egypt, a destination that is commonly perceived as offering value for money.

“Much attention has focused on non-Eurozone destinations such as Egypt over the last few months but Malta still offers incredible value for money as a holiday destination, as the survey proves. Even with the current exchange rate a cup of coffee on Malta will only set you back £0.96 whilst a bottle of beer averages £1.34”, explains Alex Incorvaja, the Malta Tourism Authority’s UK Director.

The Maltese Islands in the southern Mediterranean are blessed with year-round sunshine, stunning scenery, a wealth of culture and historical sites, some of the Mediterranean’s best dive spots and a throbbing nightlife – all just a three-hour flight from the UK. In addition, with new direct low cost airline routes opening from Edinburgh, Bristol and Newcastle, Malta has never been easier – or cheaper - to reach.
