George Wimpey East Scotland Ltd has challenged the pupils of Sacred Heart Primary School in Penicuik, Midlothian to design Health & Safety posters that demonstrate the dangers of playing near a construction site.

Being launched as part of an overall Health & Safety presentation to the pupils of Sacred Heart, the company is keen to drive home the message of the dangers associated with playing near any construction site, and raise awareness of the children’s need to be extra vigilant as the company begins work on the construction of a new synthetic pitch in the park adjacent to Carlops Road near their school.

The company will launch the competition as part of their Health & Safety presentation at the school assembly on Friday 1 June, 2007 – where the company’s fun character George Wimpey will be on-hand to help the team communicate the importance of the children’s safety around construction sites.

Winners of the competition in each of the three categories (5-7yrs; 7-9yrs and 9-11yrs) will win a family activity day out in Ocean Terminal – with tickets for the cinema, the indoor climbing facility and one of the restaurants all up for grabs. Every entry received will also be laminated and displayed around the site fencing advising the general public to be aware of the dangers and to keep well away.

This type of activity and involvement with local schools has proven an effective deterrent in the past as Kevin Mackenzie, of George Wimpey East Scotland explains: “Health and safety in and around our construction areas is of vital importance to George Wimpey, and taking this type of proactive approach with local schools allows us to reinforce just how important it is for children to stay away from building sites. Our fun character and the safety poster competition allows us to deliver a very important message in a fun and interactive way.”

Mrs Mary Durkacz is head teacher of Sacred Heart Primary School: “I’m delighted to welcome George Wimpey into our school to highlight the dangers associated with children playing near any construction site. We will have a significant amount of construction work in the local area for some time, so it’s great that George Wimpey understand the importance of our children’s safety and have created such an interactive and fun approach to appeal to our children.”
