One of the finest Georgian houses in the Highlands for sale

22nd May 2007 Print
Braelangwell House Steeped in history and dating back to the 18th Century, Braelangwell House, situated in the heart of the Black Isle, Ross-shire is on sale with leading Scottish property consultants, CKD Galbraith.

During the 18th Century Braelangwell belonged to the Urquhart family. The last Urquhart to own the estate and property was David Urquhart born at Braelangwell, Cromarty in 1805, a famous diplomat and publicist who served for many years at the British Legation in Constantinople. Urquhart was also famous for introducing hot-air Turkish baths into Britain.

This elegant Georgian country mansion build in 1790, is set in its own private estate spanning 76 acres of land and incorporating ancient woodland – one of the last remaining areas of ancient woodland on the Black Isle. The current owners have run Braelangwell as a very successful Wolsey Lodge bed and breakfast, renowned for its graceful and comfortable accommodation and excellent cuisine. The house has recently been restored and extensively refurbished whilst retaining many of the period features.

The house is built of warm sandstone with exquisite detail of the period including pillared porch and sash windows. Internally the house boasts a succession of fine reception rooms with attractive plasterwork and elaborate marble and wooden fireplaces, elegant bay windows and an impressive staircase with mahogany handrail. Original woodwork features throughout the house with period shuttered windows and panelling.

The entrance hall is home to two life-size Terracotta Warriors and has spectacular original painted ceilings, whilst the Wedgewood Blue Ballroom comprises floor to ceiling windows and crystal chandeliers. The master bedroom also possesses floor to ceiling sash windows and is named The Garden Room due to the beautiful views across the lawns and walled garden.

John Robin Bound of CKD Galbraith’s Inverness office said: “This magnificent B listed county mansion is a house of contrast. The formality of the reception rooms contrast with the comfortable and practicality of the large and airy Robinson and Cornish kitchen with oil fired Aga and generous sitting area. This house can be used with a maximum of flexibility. It is currently being run as a very successful Wolsey Lodge and the current owners are happy to pass on this flourishing business to the purchaser.”

Braelangwell House comprises a ballroom, billiard room, cellar, conservatory, study, library, dining room, sitting room, butler’s pantry, kitchen and utility room and eight bedrooms with four en suite bathrooms.

The Black Isle is one of the most beautiful parts of the Scottish Highlands offering tranquillity and relaxation. There is a wealth of attractions available including Cawdor and Culloden Castles, the Falls of Shin and Glenmorangie Distiller and the historical town of Cromarty all within easy reach. The picturesque villages of Beauly and Strathpeffer are to the west and to the south is the famous Loch Ness.

Offers over £1,200,000 are being invited for Braelangwell House.
