Renault Sport Duathlon raises £650 for charity

Northamptonshire’s Rockingham Motor Speedway provided the venue for this year’s annual Renault Sport duathlon which raised an impressive £650 for two charities.

The money raised is to be split equally between Barnardo’s and brain injury charity Headway in support of former Formula Renault UK driver Henry Surtees.

Held on Friday, 18th September, a total of 27 competitors connected to the TOCA paddock – including BTCC drivers Tom Chilton and Paul O’Neil – took part in the event which involved cycling, running and cycling around the 1.47-mile oval circuit.

As the race got underway, Chilton took an early lead followed by Formula Renault UK and Clio Cup promoter Simon North and former Formula Renault UK driver Lee Dwyer. After the transition from bike to foot, Dwyer soon began to claw back Chilton’s early advantage and take the lead before starting the final cycle lap.

Dwyer held firm throughout the last lap to claim his maiden Renault Sport duathlon title and follow in the footsteps of 2008 winner Alexander Sims. North finish second with Mike Garth making a late charge to claim the final podium spot. Formula Renault UK driver Lewis Williamson finished fourth while Chilton had to settle for fifth.

Darren Wilson and Ashley Gelder from Clio Cup team Amery Motorsport secured the team honours.

Commenting on the event Simon North said: “The event was a fantastic success and I’d like to personally thank everyone who took part or who made a donation. It was great to see so many teams, drivers and engineers from the TOCA paddock coming together for charity and helping us surpass last year’s figure of £500.”
