Vintage at Goodwood rocks British establishment

Vintage at Goodwood Vintage at Goodwood – a new annual event for lovers of British Cool and Popular Culture – is the curious lovechild of Lord March, and design duo Gerardine and Wayne Hemingway. Vintage at Goodwood was launched in style last weekend (18-21 September) with over 130,000 people enjoying a stellar taster event in keeping with Goodwood Revival’s outstanding ability to catapult us all back in time to the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s , the heyday of this iconic British motor circuit.

This year, Goodwood’s Richmond Lawn saw an additional burst of creativity with the introduction of the Vintage tent, featuring the best in jive, rockabilly, soul, garage rock, burlesque and torch singers. A Vintage Emporium created by acclaimed designers Morag Mysercough and Gerardine Hemingway was armed with delectable vintage clothing treats and a ‘mobbed’ hair salon where your ‘barnet’ could be transformed into a perfectly formed beehive or flat top.

The Vintage tent, with its bona fide black and white chequered dance floor and 50s styled cocktail bar featured a ‘Mods vs. Rockers DJ off’ between two of the Vintage at Goodwood curators Eddie Pillar (founder of Acid Jazz records) and Luke Morgan (artist and lead singer of The Highliners), alongside eclectic DJ sets live sets and live performances from The Filthy Six, The Dirty Robbers and much much more.

Vintage fashion shows, hosted by the BBC’s Katherine Higgins, ran throughout the day, and Vintage ‘Best in Show’ rosettes were carefully pinned upon the most glamorous, best-dressed and downright cool punters dudes, dudettes and jazz cats.

The secrets to Vintage’s groundbreaking concept were revealed as Goodwood guests old and new stood open mouthed as they watched live burlesque, performed in a giant, mirrored shoe, sat on top of a velvet draped Speakeasy cocktail bar, whilst authentic 40’s swingers , jazz dancers ,rockabilly’s, and soulies well and truly rocked the dance floor. A visit from Lord Peter Mandelson on his grand Revival tour proved a hit as he grabbed a hold of Vintage design curator Morag Mysercough and proved that some politicians can dance.

Founded by the Earls of March, Wayne Hemingway MBE and Gerardine Hemingway, and set amidst the beautifully English landscape of the Goodwood Estate, the first Vintage at Goodwood on August 13-15 2010, will feature something for all tastes. There will be fashion, design, film, performance art, burlesque, vintage funfairs, roller discos, drive in cinemas, the largest vintage clothes and home interior market every assembled, plus of course the music which will feature the DJ’s and bands from the swing, rockabilly, mod, soul, funk, disco, rare groove, glam, new wave ska, electro, new romantic and acid house scenes. The ‘Inspired By ...’ stage will feature contemporary bands and artists inspired by this rich cultural history.

For the first mid-August 2010 event the Vintage audience will be capped at 25,000. Last weekend saw enthusiasts keenly snapping up tickets during the Goodwood Revival, a full eleven months before this first event!

The proven and award winning Goodwood and Hemingway Design teams will be supported by a “dream team” of ‘Vintage Curators’ plus the best British creative talent, to provide unparalleled attention to design, and organisational detail that will ensure that Vintage at Goodwood will be THE summer cultural event.
