A hidden gem in the Dolomites

High above the valley of Merano – nestling against the sundrenched southern slopes of the mighty Dolomites and commanding the most spectacular sweeping views over one of Europe’s most enchanting landscapes this is the positioning of the Castel Fragsburg, a fine 17th century Hunting Retreat of noble origins, now the smallest luxury hotel in the region.

Supreme comfort and restrained luxury dominates in the 23 individual rooms and stylish suites, most with balconies or terraces offering an unforgettable panorama. The private grounds of the hotel stretch over 10,000 sqm and incorporate orchards, gardens and a generous heated outdoor pool, again with dramatic views from every angle.

Castel Fragsburg is privately owned since 1954 by the Ortner family, who have given the hotel remarkable character reflecting the unspoilt, vast landscape of the Dolomites and the vineyards and orchards of South Tyrol.

Now the hotel is managed by hands on proprietor Alexander Ortner, who is intent to take this unique hotel to new markets to increase its prominence and above all take the culinary angle to new heights.

Chef Alois Haller and his talented young team are widely recognised to be on the top of their game, Gault Millau currently awards them a remarkable 15 points and 2 toques – whilst top magazines in Italy, Germany and beyond unreservedly recommend the culinary creativity and sheer quality of food and service at the Castel Fragsburg.

An unrivalled choice of local, seasonal and mostly organic produce plays a major part in the originality of Chef Haller’s menus.

The hotel is a primarily a hideaway destination, cherished by those seeking privacy and relaxation, exemplary hospitality and a refined atmosphere.

However the Castel is also an ideal venue for family gatherings, special celebrations, small weddings and top end incentives - the management are experienced in assisting and organising anything from an intimate family party in one of the private rooms to a wedding ceremony in the local chapel, cookery lessons with the chef or a helicopter tour of the Dolomites.

For those in search of personal indulgence, the integrated Spa offers a wide range of applications and treatments, all based on a holistic philosophy and offering locally sourced products. Golf enthusiasts can choose between seven spectacular courses, two of them within the easy radius of 12 km - others no less popular but a little further afield. There are virtually hundreds of kilometres of recommended hiking and mountain biking trails, the staff at Castel Fragsburg are at hand for maps and advice.

Art, Culture and Music are written with capital letters in the Merano region, a wide offering of internationally recognised events takes place throughout the season. From the spectacular Apple Blossom season in the spring to the Wine Harvest festival ‘VinoCulti’ in the autumn - from the open air concerts at Castle Trautmannsdorff to the Musical Soirées in historic houses and the Grand Prix of Merano, the highlight of the horse racing season, the choices are almost limitless.
