Cumbria is open for business

The newspapers and television news bulletins have been full of the images the devastation wreaked in Cumbria by the recent flooding. But as the festive period approaches the local authorities, emergency services and the locals themselves have been working hard to get their lives back to normal – and Cumbria is very much open for business.

Since the rain has eased work has been carried out to try to get the worst hit areas back to some sort of normality. Temporary bridges have been constructed, surviving ones have been repaired and strengthened and even a new railway station has been opened to bring transport links to those stranded by the lost bridges.

Eric Robson, chair of Cumbria Tourism, says it is important visitors understand there are many parts of the county that are accessible and safe to visit this winter.

Mr Robson says: “The Lake District and Cumbria is a vast area and is much larger than people realise. Much of the county was unaffected and even those areas that were are recovering well.  We are very much open for business, it is safe to travel, and the first frosts on the fell tops ensure that the views are back to their breathtaking best.”

This winter travellers are being encouraged not to miss out on trips to the region as the rest of the county’s stunning Lake District is still very much open for business. With unique boutiques full of exquisite gifts perfect for your festive shopping, cosy pubs with roaring fires for comfort food lunches and delightful B&Bs just perfect for your yuletide and winter break, it is certainly a very appealing place to visit.

Cumbria Tourism is advising people planning to visit the Lake District over the winter period to continue with their travel plans, but if people are particularly concerned and looking for reassurance and advice, then they can call the new Visitor Information Helpline (01539 825070).

Mr Robson adds: “It is almost a month now since the flooding and weather conditions are improving.  The longer term forecast is looking more promising with Cumbria expecting cold, crisp, dry wintery days, which will showcase the best of the county’s scenic attractions.

“There are still a range of things to see and do and places to stay and dine. Most key events are going ahead as planned including Victorian tours and illuminated spectaculars at Muncaster Castle on the West Coast and a range of Christmas Markets and Santa specials at various places around the county with free parking days thrown in to welcome people back.”
