Sports car fans head to Silverstone for FreeRACE Championship

The engines are revving as Silverstone prepares for the inaugural UK final of the FreeRACE Championship which kicks off this weekend. This brand new sport is unique in the Sports car world and will unfold on January 16th when the drivers will go head to head to race a purpose built course different to traditional racing tracks.
Saturday’s races at Silverstone will see 200 drivers compete for nine places in the UK final to be held on Sunday. Here the nine drivers will go head to head with big UK names including Robby Kerr, Matt Neal and Paul O’Neill for the final four UK places. The final of the Championship will take place later in the year and will see the top four drivers from the UK, Germany and France competing for the ultimate title and the cash prize of £10,000
FreeRACE gives sports car enthusiasts the chance to make their driving dreams a reality in a brand new and innovative form of competition. They will drive FreeRace prepared Nissan 370zs around a track full of surprises. The rules are that there are no rules. There is no determined route around the course and drivers will need their wits about them as new routes become available as they drive. After starting the race by performing a donut, the drivers are going to have to race around a track littered with burnt out cars, concrete blocks and obstacles.
Laurence Wiltshire from Silverstone says; At Silverstone we look forward to new and exciting events. We took the Nissan Freeride Ski and Snowboard World Tour as an inspiration and developed this new form of competition. We are busy preparing the customised track and expect to see some brilliant driving this weekend as the drivers aim for the final. We are pleased that Nissan have recognised the excitement this event will bring to Sports car owners and have supported us 100%. Across Europe they will get 600 Sports car enthusiasts experiencing their 370Z in a completely different way.
Paul O’Neill, renowned touring car legend said; The FreeRACE Championship is new and exciting and provides the chance to race in a totally different situation from the regular circuits. It’s good to see Silverstone and Nissan supporting such an innovative event and the Nissan 370Zs they’ve provided are going to be perfect. A powerful front engine and rear wheel drive is just what you want for a race like this. It’s a great warm-up for the season ahead and it’ll be interesting to see if any of these sports car enthusiasts can take on the pros.
