Barratt’s zero carbon development in Bristol, Hanham Hall, has been quick off the mark to create a positive impact in the area.

It has just been named as one of the best performing projects in the UK in terms of improving sustainability in civil engineering.

Hanham Hall, a former hospital site owned by the Homes and Communities Agency, the national housing and regeneration agency, is part of the Carbon Challenge, a government programme that intends to create a number of zero carbon housing developments across the country.

And it has just scored more than 96 per cent in its interim CEEQUAL assessment – just weeks after work started on the development of 195 new homes,  the refurbishment of the original Hanham Hall and the creation of office and community facilities.

CEEQUAL is the assessment and awards scheme for improving sustainability in civil engineering and public realm projects.

Its objective is to encourage the attainment of environmental excellence in civil engineering, and deliver improved environmental and social performance in project specification, design and construction.

Barratt managing director Richard Gregory said he was delighted with the success of Hanham Hall in its first assessment.

“This development is ground breaking in so many ways and to have achieved such a high rating is tremendous and really illustrates the commitment we have to excellence in every aspect of Hanham Hall,’’ said Mr Gregory.

“Being awarded the CEEQUAL 'Excellent' Interim Award means that we have impressed the assessors in areas from the environmental credential at Hanham Hall and social aspects such as the use of water, energy and land as well as community relations and archaeology.’’
