When Ron and Betty Woodman decided to move from Cheshire to Worthing to be closer to their daughter, they had no idea they would be reunited with long lost friends Fred and Doreen Chandler who they’d met some years earlier on a Mediterranean cruise.

While searching for a new home, Ron and Betty Woodman decided to have a look at McCarthy & Stone’s retirement development Highfield Court on Penfold Lane. While being shown around by the sales consultant, they were spotted by residents Fred and Doreen Chandler, who were convinced they’d met the couple before.

Fred Chandler explains: “We were walking across the car park, returning from a trip to the shops, when we spotted two familiar faces. We had a brief conversation but I just couldn’t quite put my finger on where I remembered them from. But later that day, I realised that we met them at dinner on a cruise in 2007. I couldn’t believe it! I knew they lived in Cheshire so to see them in Worthing visiting the development where we lived was incredible!”

The next day, Fred and Doreen showed a photo they had taken with the Woodmans on the cruise to Joe, the sales consultant, who confirmed they were indeed the same couple and that they were also purchasing an apartment at Highfield Court.

“While we were searching for our new home in Worthing, I had often remarked to my husband and my daughter Jane that I’d love to know where our friends the Chandlers lived as I knew it was somewhere in Worthing,” Betty Woodman commented. “While on the cruise they had written their address on a beer mat for us but during the course of our trip, we managed to lose it, which was a real shame as we didn’t see them again. I was over the moon to discover that we had not only been reunited with them again but we would also be neighbours!”

The Woodmans moved to Highfield Court in October 2009 and are really enjoying life at the development, as Betty explains: “We are delighted with our new apartment. We had been searching for a lower maintenance home that would allow us to keep our independence and that’s exactly what is on offer at Highfield Court. Not only have we been reunited with our long lost friends, we’ve made lots of new friends too and we’re really enjoying the company.”

Fred Chandler agrees: “One of the biggest benefits of living at Highfield Court is that you feel part of a real community. We regularly have social events, such as coffee mornings and fish and chip suppers and we have celebrations for residents’ birthdays as well. It’s a great place to live and I’m sure Betty and Ron will be as happy here as we are.”

Highfield Court is located in the popular Broadwater area, north east of Worthing town centre. The development comprises 41 one and two bedroom retirement apartments, each benefiting from a well-thought out design.

Features include 24-hour emergency Careline call points, electrical sockets at a raised height to reduce bending, illuminated light switches, a security entry system, easy grip lever taps in the bathroom and kitchen and energy efficient heating.

Residents at Highfield Court can also enjoy landscaped gardens, socialise and relax in the communal lounge and invite family and friends to stay in the development’s guest suite. Prices start from £149,950.
